About this tour

Escape the crowds and step into the atmospheric world of Temple, one of London’s most enchanting and historic districts. Wander its winding lanes, cloisters, and secluded courtyards, where echoes of centuries-old traditions and legal lore still linger.

Discover an extraordinary disused tube station frozen in time, uncover a hidden alley with fascinating ties to the newspaper industry, and visit the mysterious site where the Knights Templar once worshipped. Along the way, cross forgotten rivers and discover a magical corner of London rarely seen by visitors.

This tour is a journey through whispered histories and shadowed streets, where the city’s quiet secrets unfold like poetry beneath your feet.

Tour details

London has more than its fair share of strange tales, and on this walk you will be journeying into the depths of the old City to discover the more extraordinary stories and locations which are often overlooked. But in order to do this, we will need to explore the forgotten alleyways and medieval courtyards, look up, around & under, and peer through windows & bars.

As the local resident Samuel Johnson once said “”Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”

And this is the walk to keep that torch for London burning bright!

Please note there are several short flights of steps on this tour which cannot be avoided. Some of the photos below provide by Pinay Flying High, international blogger who wrote this article about the walk!

Starting point
Starts outside Temple Tube Station
Finishing point
Finishes on Fleet street roughly five minutes walk to St Paul’s Cathedral and ten minutes walk to Temple.
Times & date
Most Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 1.30pm. However, please check schedule for full details as dates may vary.
Tickets are from £18 - a small booking fee is added

Does the tour go ahead in the rain?

Yes, all our tours go ahead in the rain, so come prepared for the famous British weather!

One thing to note for our changing the guard tour: The British Army reserve the right to alter the changing the guard ceremony if they so wish, but will not make a decision until the event is due to start. If there is a threat of rain, your guide will inform the group of the potential impact on the ceremony. You will always see guards, but their movements may vary, and musicians may not play.

How do I recognise the Guide?

Our guide will be carrying a Fun London Tours flag.

Can I turn up for a walk without booking first?

It is very possible that our tours will be full so if you turn up without booking you may well miss the tour. This is particularly relevant on the Changing The Guard which is extremely popular. We limit numbers on our tours to make them more personable and to maximise enjoyment, so we would have to turn you away if this number has been reached. However, those who booked online will be prioritised, followed by a first to arrive basis.

If you don’t book in advance you will not get any notification of changed locations or cancellations. We will always turn up for the tour if someone has booked, but if there have been no bookings for a tour it is very likely that it will be cancelled. And don’t forget, some of the walks are discounted for those who book online.

How early should I arrive for the walk?

Please come 10 minutes before the allotted time so that we are ready to go promptly, especially if you have decided to come without booking online. Please note that in London there are regular road closures, engineering works on the tube and other events which can easily delay your journey. Ensure you make allowances for this as we do not wait for latecomers.

Are your tours suitable for people with limited mobility or wheelchair users?

Our tours can be adapted to suit wheelchair users or those with limited mobility – just let us know ahead of time so the guide can prepare a suitable alternative step-free route.

The only exception is our Changing the Guard tour, which requires good mobility as we march alongside the guards and we cannot avoid steps.

Loved Hidden London My niece (15), nephew (13) and I really loved Rachel and the whole walking tour we did recently on 3 August. I had enjoyed on one other Fun London Tour and this one was even better! Super happy to recommend it. I've even been back to some of the locations Rachel showed us, so eager was I to share them with others. It was 90 minutes - neither too long nor too short. Rachel was a fun, relaxed, very knowledgeable guide we all enjoyed interacting with and listening to. Thank you Rachel. Look forward to the next.

Excellent tour of some hidden gems of central London. Our guide Paul was excellent. He was very informative, friendly, funny and easy to talk to. Really enjoyed seeing the landmarks you would normally not notice and just walk past. The 1.5hours was a good length and there was not too much walking and was definitely value for money.

A really positive experience! Really amazing tour. Rachel was just fantastic. As a seasoned Londoner I tend to be slightly judgy about tours around areas I know well, but this was really enlightening, tonk me too new places and the guide's enthusiasm and love of the subject really brought it to life! Fun and interesting tour! We had a great time! Lovely guide and a very interesting and funny tour. Another bonusfrom the fact that the tour includes hidden little places is that most of the tour is through less busy areas that are nice and quiet. I'd say this tour can be greatly enjoyed by people of all ages but would add that children will definitely have fun!

Great tour for learning a little about how London has evolved over the centuries Great tour with knowledgeable guide. Definitely saw and learnt about things I wouldn’t have noticed by myself and walked an area of London that was unfamiliar previously. Max was an excellent and engaging guide. The pace is manageable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness, but worth noting that due to the nature of the tour there are lots of uneven surfaces with cobbles and steps.

Fun and informative What a great trip! Our guide Rachel was really fun and had answers to all the questions posed by the group. I’d previously lived in the neighbourhood best part of a decade and today learnt more in 90 minutes than in all that time.

What a lovely way to spend an hour or so My favorite way to be a tourist in a strange city is just to walk around and take in the strange sights and sounds and see what happens. But as I was following the delightful Rachel around on our tour today it became apparent to me how much I’m missing! All the cool little side streets, and the backstories, and the backstories to the backstories. Seeing the Inns of Court today, and the house of Samuel Johnson himself (and his cat Hodge) turned out to be the fulfillment of bucket list items I didn’t even know I had. Thank you so much!

Very informative delivered by an excellent guide Our guide, Rachel, was the key to our five star recommendation. The 90 minute tour was very informative and delivered with a lightness of touch that made it easy to digest. Lots of subjects are covered so there is something for everyone and plenty of secrets are unlocked at various places around Temple & Fleet Street. The pace was good, the walking easy and the distance covered was just right. I cannot recommend this tour and our guide enough.

Revealed a section of hidden London! Rachel was fabulous..well informed and a great communicator! The walk was just long enough and covered an array of interesting places and historical figures. Very good value for money. There was 17 people in the tour, mostly couples but as a solo traveller it wasn't uncomfortable.

FLEET STREET TOUR Rachel took us for a fascinating tour of the amazingly quiet streets off Fleet Street. The temple courtyards were beautifully quiet, considering we were in central London! Lots of history, a few venues to eat and drink pointed out on the way and she was able to navigate questions brilliantly.

An Interesting Tour Met Rachel and along with around a dozen others we were shown some of the more irregular sights around Fleet Street and its surroundings. Rachel was very knowledgeable, engaging and easy to listen to with many anecdotes to make the tour a very pleasant experience. We would recommend this tour to any one who wants to see a different side to London.

Enjoyable walking tour of Secret London Secret London Walking Tour. We spent a wonderful hour & a half walking around the area near Trafalgar Square & Covent Garden. Our guide (Joe) was great! He told us just the right amount of facts & anecdotes and had a good sense of humour too. His voice was clear and so he was able to be heard above any passing traffic! We were taken to little streets we would never have visited otherwise. The length of the tour was just right. All-in-all a very enjoyable experience.

Fantastic Walking History Tour We had a great time on the tour, which was gifted to us as a present. Despite having lived in London for many years, we learnt so much and visited areas we'd never seen before. Rachel, the guide, was friendly and informative throughout. She managed to project her voice so well, and we could clearly hear the information in all the locations we stopped at. The group was a nice size of about 20 people - small enough to easily interact with the guide and ask questions. We were lucky with the weather, so it was really lovely to walk the streets and learn the facts. The area we covered did not involve a huge amount of walking. We started at Temple Station and ended up near Fleet Street. At the end of the tour, we visited the recommended "Olde Chesire Cheese" pub for a quick drink - it was so amazing to see a bit of indoor history too. I would definitely recommend the Hidden London tours if you like to know some slightly more obscure details of London and its back street history, and I am contemplating going on one of their alternative routes soon.
