About this tour

On this tour we enjoy the best of two worlds as we will observe highlights of two extraordinary ceremonies – the Change of the Lifeguard (Horse Guards), and the Change of the Guards (Foot Guards with bearskin hats).

You’ll discover how breathtaking it is to be submerged in the history of this event – we have witnessed versions of these ceremonies for over 360 years! Of course tourism has moved on from the 17th century, so it’s vital that you have an experienced and entertaining tour guide to ensure you are in the right positions to get those perfect photos, and that is why Fun London Tours will provide you with an invaluable and utterly memorable highlight of your trip to London.

Contact us at info@funlondontours.com if you wish to book this as a private tour.

Tour details

This the perfect tour to observe both foot guards and horse guards while staying away from the main crowds. It is also perfect if you like to walk at a slower pace, as we will take our time rather than marching alongside the guards (which we do on our original changing the guard tour).

If you adore horses, this is definitely your tour… And for lovers of pageantry, ceremony, grandeur and good old British pomp & circumstance, you’ll be in your element!

Note: Please bring comfortable shoes and a bottle of water with you. It can be very crowded near Buckingham Palace, particularly in summer months.

Disclaimer: The British Army can alter the date of the Guard Change Ceremony, and can change or cancel it at their discretion. No matter how bad the weather, the walk will still go ahead, as the final notification of ceremony cancellation will not be made by the British Army and police until after 10.30am. Although unlikely, the ceremony has been known to proceed in the rain before! Your guide will explain more on the day of the tour.

This tour runs for private groups. For something built around your own group or occasion, take a look at our bespoke private tours.

Starting point
Meet outside the Methodist Central Hall ten minutes before tour starts for check in.
Finishing point
Tour finishes near Buckingham Palace.

Does the tour go ahead in the rain?

Yes, all our tours go ahead in the rain, so come prepared for the famous British weather!

One thing to note for our changing the guard tour: The British Army reserve the right to alter the changing the guard ceremony if they so wish, but will not make a decision until the event is due to start. If there is a threat of rain, your guide will inform the group of the potential impact on the ceremony. You will always see guards, but their movements may vary, and musicians may not play.

How do I recognise the Guide?

Our guide will be carrying a Fun London Tours flag.

How far do we walk?

This depends on the tour. All of the walks will have between 5 and 15 stops, with a 3-5 minute walk between them. The Changing The Guard tour has a three minute burst where we march at the same pace as the guards, but otherwise all our walks are rather easily paced!

Will the walk ever be cancelled?

It is very unlikely. The main reason for a tour being cancelled would be a major transportation issue, although this is extremely rare. The Guides live in London, so can make use of the tube and bus network and will follow up to date transport information to try to prevent any problems. Very rarely extreme weather conditions could prevent a tour going ahead, but even in heavy rain or snow tours generally continue (bring your umbrellas and ponchos if bad weather is predicted!)

There are a few rare occasions through the year where the Guard Change fails to take place for reasons out of the hands of the Tour Guide. Sometimes this will not become apparent until after the walk starts (usually due to weather conditions). In such a case the Tour Guide will continue with a modified tour. If you are not 100% satisfied with this, we will endeavour to provide you with an alternative date, tour or discount.

If a total of fewer than four people are booked onto the tour then we reserve the right to cancel. In such cases you will be sent an email/SMS and given prior notice, with the offer of a refund or alternative date.

In the event of cancellation, we will endeavour to let you know with as much notice as possible by either email or SMS and provide a full and prompt refund or offer an alternative date/tour if preferable.

Do you cater for disabilities?

At FLT we try to be as inclusive as possible, so if you have any particular disability, please email us at info@funlondontours.com beforehand and we will do our best to ensure the tour works for you.

Is the Change of the Guard tour suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility?

The public Changing of the Guard Tour requires a good level of mobility as we will be marching alongside the Guards and there is at least one set of steps to navigate, so it is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. However, if you book a Private Changing the Guard Tour we can adapt to your needs and ensure you don’t miss out.

Great experience! So glad we chose to do the changing of the guard via a tour! And so glad we had Paul has our guide! Fully fueled my coffee the whole time, he shared not only history and fun facts, but made sure we had the best spots for the action and for-warned us of moving quickly, best times to get photos, etc. Wonderful time and I’d gladly do another tour with Paul!

Amazing changing of the guard, military marching band, small group tour, including entry to Buckingham Palace. Tall Paul was great. We had been told that was his nickname because he’s 6 foot seven and very easy to follow. He he knew all the shortcuts and the best views watching the marching band and the changing of the guards. Hr had an amazing wealth of knowledge of what was going on and the history. He was funny and interesting. He had it timed to get to the best spots for viewing. At the end, the spot we were at was so close we had to make sure we didn’t get hit with a trombone. We were upfront on every spot he picked. We would definitely take the tour again. Thank you tall Paul. Peter and Robin

Learned a lot about Churchill. Matt was great. He was very knowledgeable about the walking part of the tour.. It ended at the Churchill in World War II Westminster war rooms. That is a self guided tour so he left us at the end of the walking tour, which was explained when we booked it. He was right on time. It was truly a spectacular tour and very educational. Singer I’m saving them for you. The crowd size was small. There were only five so you were able to hear everything he was saying.

Make sure you do this with Fun London Tours and ask for Paul Sensational but that was all thanks to Paul. It was an early start, there were a lot of emails changing the times, but the whole small group made it on timed we were treated to the most immersive experience. Paul is very enthusiastic- even that early in the morning! and happens to know an incredible amount of stuff but I appreciated the obscure bits he shared and that he seems to have better intel than any of the other tours we passed finding us the very best places to stand and then the very best routes so we could maximize seeing the very most. A great tour but I wouldn’t book with the others. So many bonuses here. Massive thanks Paul - love The Canadians.
